Because of rising fuel costs and increased transportation spend, Pennant utilizes pooling operations from their Northlake plant, which allows them to reduce transportation expenses by consolidating their less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments with other companies' compatible freight headed in the same geographic direction. The Northlake plant ships products to five pooling locations where products are unloaded, married with other trucks' freight, and then delivered to customers.

Using pooling operations, Pennant can send small shipments to customers more quickly and cost-effectively by consolidating various shippers' loads into a full truckload, as opposed to each shipper sending their own truck. Moving frozen products via pool distribution can be complicated, because frozen providers are less common across the United States than refrigerated providers.
