Vacuum Cooling for Bakery Products on the Advance

ZUG, Switzerland, February 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Swiss mechanical engineering company Permafood AG strengthens its growth strategy with the acquisition of Switzerland's Spirig Engineering. The transaction becomes retroactively by 1. January 2008.

The engineering company predominantly serving international clients gained excellent reputation with developments in the high tech area. Robotic systems for the automobile industry as well as important components for the air- and space industry are just some applications amongst many others. Spirig Engineering consisting of 12 engineers and technicians is prominent in developing and producing high tech machines based on vacuum technology. Some industry examples would be the coating of screens and trend setting solar cells. These projects have gotten much international attention in the last 10 years.

Permafood AG gains with this transaction important strategic know-how in the field of advanced vacuum technology. The company strengthens thereby its worldwide market position in the production of vacuum cooling systems. This leading edge industrial technology does provide for energy-saving, efficient and careful cooling of food. Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Welcomes Bernanke's Remarks on U.S. Ethanol Tariffs

SAO PAULO, Brazil, February 28 /PRNewswire/ --

The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) applauds today's remarks by U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke favoring a reduction in tariffs on Brazilian ethanol to help take pressure off food prices in the United States as a positive approach that goes far beyond economics. In UNICA's opinion, Bernanke's suggestion favors clean renewable energy, boosts the fight against global warming and defies the distorted logic now in place that taxes biofuels while fossil fuels move unobstructed around the globe, without trade barriers or any other restrictions.

UNICA President and CEO Marcos Jank called it, "The type of move, if adopted, that would set an example for other countries and regions of the world to commit to using sustainable biofuels, so that the renewable fuel industry can develop worldwide in an orderly and productive manner, with due regard for the necessary balance between producing food and fuel."

Brazil is a pioneer in the large scale production and use of ethanol as a motor vehicle fuel, an option it adopted in the mid-seventies following the first oil crisis. The country is now the world's second-largest ethanol producer, and flex-fuel cars are a runaway success, accounting for close to 90% of all new car sales in the country. In mid-February, ethanol surpassed gasoline in terms of volume sold on the Brazilian market. Sugarcane ethanol is also the most cost-effective and energy-efficient biofuel available anywhere in the world -- for every unit of fossil fuel used in its production, 9 units of renewable energy are generated with a reduction of about 90% in greenhouse gas emissions when compared with gasoline.

Bernanke told the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that allowing Brazilian sugarcane ethanol to enter the country tariff-free "will reduce costs in the United States." The remarks were made during an exchange with Senator Wayne Allard (Republican-Colorado), who asked about benefits of reducing tariffs in order to contain inflation caused by escalating food prices in the United States.

Bernanke admitted it is difficult to say to what extent demand for corn ethanol is boosting food prices in the U.S., but "a significant portion of the corn crop is being diverted to ethanol, which raises corn prices." He added that some soybean acreage has also moved to corn production, which probably has had some effect on soybean prices as well. By way of comparison, Brazil's entire ethanol production occupies about 1% of the country's arable land.

Most ethanol made in the U.S. comes from corn and domestic production is protected from Brazil's cheaper and more energy-efficient sugarcane ethanol by a steep 54-cent a gallon tariff. U.S. corn producers also benefit from vast government subsidies, while no subsidies exist for Brazilian sugarcane growers.

"The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry is ready to supply ethanol, without need to expand production into sensitive biomas or causing any supply problems for our internal market. Brazil can also provide the technology so that more countries can adopt this clean and obviously viable option. Clearly we would all be better off if 100 countries that grow sugarcane around the world supplied energy to the rest of the world, instead of only 20 countries that control oil supplies," added Jank.

ABOUT UNICA

The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) represents the top producers of sugar and ethanol in the country's South-Central region, especially the state of Sao Paulo, which accounts for 60% of the country's total production. Along with its 107 member companies, UNICA develops position papers, statistics and specific research in support of Brazil's sugar, ethanol and bioelectricity sectors. Its membership accounts for about 50% of Brazil's sugarcane harvest. In the 2007/08 harvest, Brazil produced an estimated 487 million metric tons of sugarcane, which yielded 30.6 million tons of sugar and 22 billion liters of ethanol.

Idaho Stands Alone in Denying Grocery Tax Credit to Those Who Need It Most

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With a slowing economy increasing the threat of hunger for many Idaho families, lawmakers should extend the state's grocery tax credit to those who need it the most, according to a new report from the Washington, DC-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Such action would undo a dubious distinction that Idaho now holds. Idaho is one of just seven states that tax groceries at the same rate as other goods. Like four of those states, Idaho offers a credit or rebate to help offset the tax. Idaho's credit is worth 0 per person, or 5 per person for people age 65 and older. But Idaho is the only state that denies the credit to many low-income households -- the ones least able to afford food for their families.

"For the many Idaho families that are barely getting by, even a small credit like this can provide real help," said Gayle Woods, Chair of the Idaho Interfaith Roundtable Against Hunger. "It makes no sense to leave these families out."

Low-income families in Idaho pay a larger share of their income in grocery taxes than higher-income families do. Yet people whose incomes are too low for them to have to file an Idaho income tax return are ineligible for the credit. In 2007, this meant that with a few exceptions, married couples with incomes below 7,500 and single people with incomes below ,750 were ineligible for the credit. Most of the excluded families are working families.

Among the other states with these kinds of credits, some give larger credits to lower-income households to reflect the larger burden that food taxes place on them, noted Nick Johnson, director of the Center's State Fiscal Project and co-author of the report. "At the very least, Idaho lawmakers should make low-income households eligible for the same credit that all other Idahoans -- including millionaires -- receive," he added.

The Center's report, "Idaho Is the Only State to Exclude Low-Income Families from Its Grocery Tax Credit," is available at
